Many Americans play ping pong in their basements and garages, but that game is nothing like the lightning fast sport of table tennis that we saw yesterday. The speed of the game and the spin on the ball are difficult for average players to understand. We watched Angela Guan, one of the best women players in America, defeat her opponent from the Philippines to move beyond the qualifying rounds to the main draw of the Universiade singles tournament. Angela's family and mine are connected through several decades of friendship. She has an infectious personality and is a great ambassador for the game. After the Universiade, Angela will start her freshman year at the University of California, Berkeley. Good luck to her and the rest of the USA table tennis team!....km
